“run for the hills” is the third track on Tate McRae’s second studio album “Think Later”. The Canadian singer released the song together with her album on December 8, 2023. But what’s the meaning of the song? And what did Tate McRae say about “run for the hills”? Let’s find out!
The Meaning of the Song
“run for the hills” is a song about a toxic relationship filled with passion, desire, and conflict. The lyrics reflect on the highs and lows of a relationship, ranging from intimate moments to heated arguments. The singer knows she should be running for the hills (get out of the relationship), but admits the thrill makes it hard to let go of the relationship.
Tate McRae revealed the song was personal. “I really wanted to nail the feeling of the relationship that I was actually going through,” she told Apple Music. “I was just absolutely obsessed with it, and I was obsessed with this person. I began to fall in love with the toxicity of it. Usually, I’m a really stubborn person and I feel like I can get myself out of any situation, but for some reason, I was stuck in this ongoing cycle of being so attached.”
McRae also admitted she eventually ‘ran for the hills’ and was now able to reflect on the relationship logically. “I’m now on the other side of it and I can be like, ‘Oh, thank god I’m on my own,’ but I think in the moment it was a mix of the worst and most magical feelings ever.”
According to McRae, “run for the hills” was the first song written for “Think Later”. The song – and album – reflect on what Tate McRae was going through in her personal life.
“A lot of this year was surrounded by relationships I went through where I didn’t really use my head in a lot of scenarios,” McRae told TODAY. “I just dove right into passion and lust and the feeling of the adrenaline of being with a person. I kind of neglected ever using my brain. That mindset is a beautiful thing, but also ends with 10 times the consequences.”
Importance and Success of run for the hills
Tate McRae stated “run for the hills” is an important track for her. Not only is it one of the strongest tracks on the album, but it is also the song her friend and family considered their favorite. “It was always a favorite of my friends from Canada, and that always was important to me,” she said.
On 18 December 2023, “run for the hills” entered the US Billboard Hot 100. The album’s earlier singles, “Greedy” and “Exes”, also reached the US charts. “Think Later” debuted on the album charts at number 4.
