Writing an article about the 10 best Beatles songs of all time feels like the most difficult task known to mankind. The Beatles’ repertoire is so immense and diverse, that one can’t possibly be ‘right’ about the band’s 10 ‘best’. But since one can’t possibly be ‘right’ regarding arts and music, I have no reason to fear being ‘wrong’ about my selection of the greatest Beatles tunes. For this article, I’ve hand-picked their 10 ‘best’ songs, based on cultural importance, legacy, and obviously, personal preference!
10. Octopus’s Garden
I refuse to make a top-10 Beatles list without mentioning all of the Fab 4, which obviously includes drummer Ringo Starr. Now, I know Ringo Starr isn’t a McCartney-caliber songwriter, but he deserves to be held in higher regard in The Beatles’ legacy. Choosing a Ringo song isn’t too hard, since he only wrote 2 songs in the band’s entire repertoire: “Octopus’s Garden” and “Don’t Pass Me By”. “Octopus’s Garden” is easily Ringo’s best song, and features some of George Harrison’s finest lead guitar work.
After many complaints, I would like to assure you that the inclusion of Octopus’s Garden was a humorous way to give some recognition to Ringo. I don’t think the song is an actual top 10 Beatles tune. Otherwise, I probably would’ve gone with “Penny Lane” or “Tomorrow Never Knows”. I suggest you fill it with a personal favorite!
9. I Want to Hold Your Hand
“I Want to Hold Your Hand” is a crucial track in the Beatles’ repertoire, as it marked the band’s first American number 1 hit. The popularity of the song heavily boosted the viewership of the band’s iconic performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, which was watched by 73 million Americans. It marked the beginning of the Beatlemania in the United States. “I Want to Hold Your Hand” is still the band’s best-selling single worldwide, selling over 12 million copies.

8. Eleanor Rigby
“Eleanor Rigby” is the first ‘sole’ McCartney composition on this list, although all Beatles songs written by Lennon or McCartney were credited to the iconic Lennon-McCartney partnership. The song went through many lyrical changes: “Eleanor Rigby” was initially titled “Miss Daisy Hawkins”, and “Father McKenzie” was first “Father McCartney”. I consider the lyrics of the song one of the best in the band’s repertoire.
7. Hey Jude
McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” to console John Lennon’s son Julian during his parents’ divorce. John Lennon, however, thought the song was McCartney’s way of approving his relationship with Yoko Ono. Something to think about during “Hey Jude’s” iconic 4-minute-long sing-along coda.

6. Strawberry Fields Forever
My number 6 marks Lennon’s first ‘solo’ entry on this list. Lennon wrote “Strawberry Fields Forever” about his childhood memories of playing in Strawberry Field Garden. It is rumored Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys was so impressed when he heard the song, that it played a role in his abandonment of the ground-breaking Smile project. A false rumor according to Wilson himself, but not too unbelievable given the beauty of the song.
5. Here Comes the Sun
For number 5 I’ve picked a George Harrison tune. The ‘quiet Beatle’ wrote “Here Comes the Sun” in Eric Clapton’s garden after skipping one of the band’s business meetings. The uplifting song is arguably the band’s most popular song, as it is the most listened-to Beatles song on Spotify. It also marks one of George Harrison’s finest works with the band, although not his finest, which you’ll see later on this list.

4. Yesterday
“Yesterday” established the Beatles’ beyond their ‘boyband’ status, attracting both younger and older audiences. The song, written by Paul McCartney, is featured on the transitional Help! and was the first song in the band’s history recorded by a single Beatle. “Yesterday” is often hailed as the ‘most covered song of all time’, which isn’t surprising when you observe the greatness of the song.

3. In My Life
In my opinion, “In My Life” is the greatest Beatles song pre-1966. The song, written primarily by John Lennon, was released on the band’s 1965 album Rubber Soul. John Lennon considered “In My Life” to be his first ‘major piece of work’, and he wasn’t wrong.

2. Something
“Something” has to be Harrison’s greatest contribution to The Beatles. Many thought the song was actually a Lennon-McCartney composition, including Frank Sinatra, who called the song “the greatest love song of the past 50 years”. The song became George Harrison’s first A-side single and “Something” topped the US Billboard Hot 100 soon after.

1. A Day In The Life
Before constructing this list, the only certain place was my number 1: “A Day In The Life”. The iconic song is, in my opinion, the ultimate Beatles track. The tune is evocative from beginning to end, starting with Lennon’s iconic opening line: “I read the news today, oh boy”.
“A Day In The Life” was written by Lennon, and later combined with a composition McCartney wrote (the middle part). The beyond-ambitious song is undoubtedly one of the most important songs ever written, released on one of the greatest albums of all time. A worthy number 1 on this list if you ask me!

This list is assembled out of appreciation for The Beatles more than anything else. And I would love to hear about YOUR appreciation for The Beatles. So, what are your favorite songs? What would your personal top 10 look like? Please let me know in the comments down below!
I MET RINGO AT RAINBOW IN LA … WHAT A SWEET GUY
I would like to see anybody to write something like “Octopuses Garden”..….🤭😁
Only a genius could 😉
Picking the 10 best Beatles songs is almost as silly as picking your favorite Beatle. What’s the point? It was all one big amazing, never to be duplicated experience so just relax, glory in all of it and stop arguing and competing!
One thing is for sure, they were probably the greatest band ever. Their prolific writing of really good stuff is probably unmatched. They were so good that they appealed to all ages and they took the world by storm.
Their legacy lives on with much of their music orchestrated. Don’t forget they wrote stuff for others too, like Marmalade for example
“Tomorrow Never Knows” is so innovative that the Music Industry still hasn’t caught up !
I question the choice of “Octopus ‘ Garden”.. the other’s I can live with and pretty much can agree with… I grew up with the Beatles from 8 years old and now I am 68 and still so appreciative of their talent.
I’m Happy Just To Dance With You No Where Man
What about free has a bird recorded after John died
Walrus…
A day in the life,in my opinion, is without doubt their greatest song. A masterpiece!
What are you thinking? Octopus’s Garden is one of the worst Beatles’ songs they ever recorded.
It’s a very good song creates beautiful imagery. Good for Ringo
I’ve always really enjoyed Ringo’s “Don’t Pass Me By”.
What a rubbish list far better beatles songs than them
I agree
Anyone that includes octopus garden in their list can’t really be taken seriously.
Across the universe? All you need is love? Lucy in the sky with diamonds? The Ballard of John and yoko? She’s leaving home? Don’t think it’s possible to have a Beatles top ten there’s to many.
Tomorrow Never Knows is the greatest and most important “pop / rock / dance” recording of the 20th Century.
What, no let it be, this list can’t be taken seriously.
“B” sides get missed here a lot.
Like ‘yes it is’ ‘rain’ ‘thank you girl’ ‘I’m down’ ‘ill get you’ ‘this boy…..Great songs, not on albums
In my humble opinion, as many others have correctly noted, naming the top 10 Beatles songs is a subjective experience. Having experienced Beatlemania as just a baby and being a little kid when The Beatles released Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane in February 1967 as a double A single, here’s my subjective list of the top 10 Beatles songs 1962 thru 1970:
10) I Am The Walrus
9) Let It Be
8) Here Comes The Sun
7) Strawberry Fields Forever
6) Eleanor Rigby
5) Something
4) With A Little Help From My Friends
3) In My Life
2) I Wanna Hold Your Hand
1) A Day In The Life
“A splendid time is guaranteed for all” as The Beatles told us in 1967! Thank you John, Paul, George and Ringo.
Saw Beatles in 64……a kundalini moment!
This list could have gone in a hundred directions and still have been good. I like the choices you made and your reasoning behind them.
feel you made a major mistake by going with writers instead of singers. Example: Jay & The Americans had a huge hit with Caramia (but they did not write it). Having everything they released on vinyl as well as a few unauthorized DVDs it is extremely difficult to only pick 10. Therefore here is my top 10 listing:
10. Yellow Submarine
9. I’m Down
8. Revolution
7. I Saw Her Standing There
6. Hey Jude
5. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3. Back In The USSR
2. Something
1. She Loves You
Definately a better 10
I saw Bruce with mccartney at Hyde Park sing this.
Strawberry fields forever is just behind’A day in the life’… if you disagree then you’re just wrong. Sorry
A Hard Day’s Night, the greatest pop/ rock song ever recorded, the most iconic opening, the most iconic scream by John, the most iconic fade out as the song ends,,,
No I’d say can’t buy me love or I’m down or maybe got to get you into my life rather than hard days night
How is While My Guitar Gently Weeps not in the list?
O.M.G., Where would I even begin? I don’t think I could ever try to make a list. I have too many number ones!
How about Shes Leaving Home?
Top 10….
1. Good Day Sunshine
2. Something
3. Love Me Do
4. The Long and Winding Road
5. I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
6. Strawberry Fields Forever
7. Tomorrow Never Knows
8. Michelle
9. I Want to Hold Your Hand
10. Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
11. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
12. Magical Mystery Tour
13. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
14. For No One
15. Eleanor Rigby
16. Get Back
17. Come Together
18. Lovely Rita
19. Drive My Car
20. Hey Jude
One more…
A Day in the Life….
And yes, the list went up to 21, so what?
Nice
After having posted my top ten Beatles songs covering 1962-1970, here’s my next 10 Beatles songs comprising numbers 11 thru 20. The Beatles released way to many great songs to list in one group of 10 and having experienced Beatlemania as just a baby, here’s the completion of The Beatles top 20 songs of all time:
20) Octopuses Garden
19) A Hard Days Night
18) Back In The USSR
17) Tomorrow Never Knows
16) Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
15) Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
14 Penny Lane
13) While My Guitar Gently Weeps
12) I Saw Her Standing There
11) I Wanna Hold Your Hand
As we all know and as stated above, The Beatles wrote and recorded way too many great songs to correctly list 10 songs therefore all lists come from a very personal, subjective place. Having been a baby when Beatlemania conquered the world and just a little kid in 1967 when The Beatles released Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane in early 1967, I lived thru the era and remember “the feel” of the times when these wonderful songs first hit the airwaves of AM radio.
It is definitely too difficult of a task to name the “best Beatle” songs. I, at just about 70 years old, still consider them my favorite band. Even better, my son, now almost 40 has an even deeper appreciation and understanding of their music. that being said, while I love all of their music I agree that “In My Life” is very special. A few others that quickly come to mind are “ Something” I Will” “Can’t Buy Me Love” “If I Fell” Ok. I admit that I could end up sitting here all day and putting in just about every song they did. So I will say that the ones I mentioned, along with many more, too numerous to mention have the most meaning to me.

I love the Beatles. Who doesn’t. I’ll just give two which are that wee bit special to me. ” Your Mother Should Know” and “Lovely Rita”.

“I Feel Fine”! Listen to the mind blowing multiple musical influences…R&R, R&B, Soul, Funk, Bossa Nova and Country….combined in the creation of one utterly amazing song.
I am impressed that you made your own top 10 list for the Beatles! I don’t even know where to start. As a kid, one of my favorite songs was Octopuses Garden. I thought it was a fun and funny song. Between my older sister and my oldest brother, they had a pretty complete Beatles album collection. I became an avid fan too, of course. While my taste in favorite songs of the Beatles has changed over the years, still fun memories of listening to the Beatles in the bedroom with my sister on a 1960s record player. She also played Eight Days A Week endlessly and it became a definite favorite too.
Day in a Life
Day Tripper
We can Work it out
Paperback writer
Penny Lane
Tomorrow never knows
Dear Prudence
Eight days a week
Help
Ticket to Ride
Norwegian Wood
I’ve got a feeling
For starters. In truth it’s probably 50
With the Beatles you really have to do too 25. There’s a lot more then top ten. Unlike most other groups it’s like top 5 are only good
This Boy,Oh Darling,Something,Yesterday,Imagine,Ballad of John & Yoko,while my guitar gently weeps,Hey Jude,Instant Karma,In my life!!!
Three of these are John Lennon’s songs, not Beatles.
2 imagine and instant karma are john’s the rest are the beatles
Yeah your right I didn’t see this boy
What about My Sweet Lord?
That was on George’s “All Things Must Pass” album, so not a collective Beatles song. It is one of George’s best songs tho’……
B side of abbey road, I can’t decide which one but I think the b side can be a whole song 😅
1. HELP, especially now that I’m a “Senior Citizen”… LOL
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3. With a Little Help From My Friends
4. Day Tripper
5. She Was Just 17
6. A Day In The Life
7. Get Back
8. In My Life
9. All My Loving
10. 8-Days A Week
There are just so many more that rise to the top for me. The ones listed could exchange position number on any given day and at any hour or moment.
How about you can,t do that and thank you girl.
I Want You (She’s So Heavy) has got to be in the Top 10.
Imagine
Imagine not the beatles it’s a Lennon song
Respect, Octopus’s garden truly deserve to be in the top 10.
Let’s give Ringo some recognition, taste is subjective anyway. Most disagree though 😉
Enjoy your day!
Nice list. As you said, an impossible task. I’d replace Octopus with While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Great suggestion. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was definitely on my shortlist, and could’ve easily made this list. Some George Harrison magic.
Enjoy your day!

Thank you! Having fun as,we all do with these timeless songs from The Beatles. Essentially all lists are correct in and that 90 percent of The Beatles output is perfection in one form or another be it early, mid or later Beatles recordings. Enjoy the music..
Seems like you’re trying to troll everyone with octopus garden. It’s a very fun and pleasant song probably Ringoes best original writing a top 10 greatest Beatles of all time. Don’t think you could’ve said to top that would be like wild honey pie. But nice Trolling.
A bit of a troll, A bit of recognition for Ringo, who knows
A bad Beatles song doesn’t exist, I think. 😉
Enjoy your day!
Tough task.
Pound for pound, the greatest Beatles song IMHA is “She’s A Woman” followed by “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Hard Day’s Night” and “Eight Days A Week” followed by “Penny Lane” and “I’m Down” followed by “In My Life” and “Come Together” followed by “And I Love Her” and “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
Ridiculous! Octopus’s garden… please.
Why not add ‘The Long and Boring Song’ as well.
I’m good with the list! There are sooo many great songs from the greatest assembly of talent that you can’t list them all. McCartney is certifiably the greatest song writer of all time! I’m sure some will disagree, but that’s just my opinion. I might have added Fool On The Hill.
I think Bob Dylan and John Lennon fans might disagree a little bit. But it’s OK that you feel Paul is the best.
There all good,songs
Rain
Because
I’m sorry but anyone guilty of composing, singing and defiling a great album with ‘bang bang Maxwells silver hammer came down upon his head’ cannot be considered a great songwriter…
I would have included Norwegian Wood in the top 10
The list could go on Ticket to Ride. All my Lovin’ It is truly hard to find the best 10. BTW, Hey Jude should be number 1 Just sayin’
I saw her standing there, Springsteen was singing this in one of his concerts and he was joined with Paul McCartney & others , the whole jam seemed as if the song was written recently while it was written in ’64 , a break point in the Beatles legacy.
It was written before 1964 as it was released in the UK and the US in 1963.
I saw Bruce with mccartney at Hyde Park sing this.
Well, I Wanna Hold Your Hand made my first two lists because it’s such a wonderful, bouncy, infectious track! All kidding aside Beatles fans, here’s the completion of the top 40 Beatles songs counting down from 40 thru 21. You now have the top 40 very finest Beatles songs of all time, (in my having lived thru it informed opinion:
40) Good Day Sunshine
39) Lady Madonna
38) Get Back
37) Dear Prudence
36) Help!
35) Getting Better
34) Rain
33) And Your Bird Can Sing
32) Yellow Submarine
31) Birthday
30) Got To Get You Into My Life
29 Come Together
28) Hello Goodbye
27) When I’m 64
26) Taxman
25) Glass Onion
24) Abbey Road Medley (The Long One)
23 The Long And Winding Road
22) Yesterday
21) Hey Jude
Admittedly Hey Jude and Yesterday should have been higher on the list however.that’s the problem with Beatlesongs: There’s just way too many great songs to list in just one top ten list therefore it’s necessary to create several lists for at the end of the day, all three of my lists are obviously “top ten lists” in their own right. The Beatles were, are and always will be, the best. The Beatles absolutely never repeated themselves in style, structure, recording technique, overall sound and their “look” as it evolved within each year reflects this well into their silo years. They remain: the greatest band in the history of the world.
Thank You All and enjoy the music! 🎶
It’s not an accurate Beatles song ranking if A Day in the Life is not number one. You got it right.

I think She Loves You should have been on the list, it’s still their best selling single in the UK.
It is almost impossible to pick a top 10, mine keep changing. Adam Levine said he has a different favorite Beatles song everyday!
“She Loves You” was definitely on the shortlist, one of my favorites from the early era. I eventually went with “I Want To Hold Your Hand” because it had more cultural impact, giving British music worldwide recognition.
Enjoy your day!
I am the walrus
Let it be ?????!!!!. Nor on the list !!!??? It’s their best song ! Good God !!
“Let it Be” is definitely a major song I’ve left out. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the song. But I understand and know many people will disagree with me.
Enjoy your day!
No no
DAY TRIPPER AND PAPERBACK WRITER ARE 2 OF THE BEST POP SONGS OF ALL TIME
OCTOPUSES GARDEN INSTEAD OF A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS???!!!
There are so many that surpass octopus garden. If your looking for playful/ unusual how about rocky raccoon. Unless your just trying to throw a bone to Ringo with octopus’s.Also Elenor rugby should have placed higher
I agree Octopus’s Garden is not close to being an actual top 10 Beatles song in terms of composition. I wanted to give Ringo some deserved recognition.
Enjoy your day!
No “Girl” . I can’t believe it 😱
I Feel Fine
Tomorrow never knows
Yes. Even the demo. These are the most important songs maybe. But real fans would have a totally different list.
Composite?
It’s a top 10 Beatles songs list tho. Not “top 10 Beatles songs to spread the love over all 4 Beatles.” For that, Penny Lane and Let it Be should replace Octopuses Garden and Her Comes the Sun, even if it means the list is dominated by Paul. I think the other Beatles would agree that Paul was domineering in the studio too 😉But this is a pretty great list. Here comes the sun is easily top 25 Beatles song as is guitar gently weeps, to give proper credit to George.
You’re not wrong Rich. Maybe I should’ve made it a top 25, then I could’ve included Octopus’s Garden without too many complaints from readers. “Here Comes the Sun” isn’t a gift though, as I think it’s a beautiful song.
If I had to replace Octopus’s Garden with an actual contender it probably would’ve been “Penny Lane” or “Here, There and Everywhere”, Or about 10 others 😉
Enjoy your day!
Yes, he could be domineering, which isn’t a compliment. Lennon wrote the most culturally significant and experimental works of The Beatles. He was the primary songwriter for most of my very favorite Beatles numbers. That said, neither of them were as good individually as they were writing songs as Lennon and McCartney.
I would add Across the Universe, All you Need is Love, and I’m only Sleeping to a list of the top 25. The singles version of Revolution is their best rocker.
One correction: I believe that the lyrics for Eleanor Rigby were a collaborative venture. Paul didn’t write that one by himself.
Hi, it surely is a list with cultural importance kept in mind, as I’ve stated in my introduction. It’s true everyone will have their personal favorites, which may not be included on this list, especially with the immense repertoire of the Beatles.
Enjoy your day!

Excellent fair list imo!! Hard to do.
Thanks Steve, wasn’t easy indeed!
You didn’t tell him to “enjoy his day”. Just sayin, is all!
Enjoy your day!
Anytime at All
There were several other tracks worthy of the Top 10 but I agree with most of them especially the Nom1. It’s really an impossible task to choose only 10 out of more than 200 songs, many of which are significant compositions.
Thank You! I was just a little kid back in the day when The Beatles went private in late ’66 early ’67 and then suddenly reappeared with a new look and sound with the Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane double A single and “promotional films” for both songs shot at the end of January, 1867. This single is arguably the greatest single in the history of popular music as it ushered in a while new way of looking at the world preceding the Sgt pepper album by three and a half months. The Beatles never repeated themselves in song writing structure, style, recording and sound which is also reflected in their “look” which evolved actually twice yearly in those years and even into their solo years. They remain, the greatest! Mick
